Ramp Agent

What exactly do ramp agents do?

Ramp agents are responsible for all work done on an aircraft during time on the ground. That includes loading and unloading the cargo and luggage, correctly balancing the cargo on board and providing the passenger lists and bills of lading. Ramp agents also gather weather information, clean and maintain the aircrafts, refuel them with fuel and fresh water, and supply the foodstuffs for the flight. They need to manage the tasks of a team of 25 team members. Ramp agents are employed either by the airports or by the airlines.

Which requirements do ramp agents need to fulfil?

Ramp agents are constantly under time pressure and have to be able to cope with that. As they are responsible for all problems which might arise during time on the ground, ramp agents need to be fast and find solutions in a goal oriented manner. They need a good sense of responsibility, perseverance and great communication skills to be able to manage all tasks regarding the aircraft. Beyond that, a background check by the Federal Aviation Authority and great English proficiency are required.

How can I become a ramp agent?

There are no regular training programmes to become a ramp agent. Therefore, it is a typical job for people changing from other careers. Ramp agents have often worked in other aviation professions, air sales or ground handling for instance. Training to become a ramp agent is generally organised within companies.

What can ramp agents expect in professional life?

Ramp Agents work predominantly in the open and are exposed to all kinds of weather conditions all year round. The necessary concentration for work on the apron can be impeded by loud noise and exhaust fumes. Ramp agents wear safety vests, work gloves and sometimes even ear protectors. Shift work and work on weekends and holidays belong to the normal work routine of ramp agents. The gross salary varies from employer to employer and comes to about 2,400 Euros/month.
