After the tourism group Thomas Cook announced in February that it intended to sell its airlines, Lufthansa Executive Board member Harry Hohmeister immediately expressed an interest in strengthening its subsidiary Eurowings through an acquisition. Condor CEO Ralf Teckentrup is very confident referring to the stable profits of the TC airlines in the past years: "Whoever buys us will not buy a problem".


Condor's long-haul business from Germany is particularly attractive for Eurowings. The Condor's overseas aircraft from Frankfurt, Munich or Düsseldorf carry thousands of passengers every year who have completed the feeder flight with Lufthansa. "The Condor long-haul route cannot actually be operated against us," says a high-ranking Lufthansa employee. The fact that the Group is taking the Eurowings long-haul route seriously in one way or another is demonstrated by the stationing of seven large Airbus aircraft at the Lufthansa hubs in Frankfurt and Munich planned for autumn.


It is unclear whether Lufthansa will also make offers for the Thomas Cook airlines in Great Britain, Scandinavia and Mallorca, as is the fate of the short- and medium-haul fleet of Condor. Ryanair has already shown open interest in the European fleet. A dismantling of the Thomas Cook airlines and possibly also of Condor would become more probable thereby. In the course of the Air Berlin bankruptcy, the European Competition Authority had already made it clear that it considered Lufthansa's market power in core Europe to be questionable. Subsequently, substantial parts of the insolvent airline landed with the low-cost airlines Ryanair and Easyjet.


Condor - as many still see it in Frankfurt - is actually Lufthansa's own flesh and blood. When the holiday airline was founded in 1955, Lufthansa was already one of the owners and four years later took over the entire airline, which, thanks to the travel-loving Germans of the economic miricle years, had in the meantime become the world's largest holiday airline. In 1997 Lufthansa brought the subsidiary into a joint venture with the later Thomas Cook Group, where the airline finally landed completely ten years ago.
