The Frankfurter airport operator Fraport is building a new terminal with a capacity comparable to the entire Berlin Tegel Airport. The foundation for the third passenger terminal is suppposed to be laid this coming Monday. The Frankfurt am Main hub is currently too small for the approximately 70 million passengers per anum. Congestion in both terminals and in front of the runways are part of everyday life at Germany's largest airport. Due to the lack of space on the ground, Fraport has frozen the number of possible hourly aircraft movements.

The new terminal in the south of the airport should create space for a further 25 million passengers per year. The opening of the first section of gate G is planned for 2021. In contrast to the other 2 terminals, terminal 3 will be located south of the runways. Travellers will be able to bridge the more than 5 kilometers from the long-distance train station to the new terminal with a driverless train within 8 minutes.
